The key to a good exploration ship is quite simple; You need to be able to go really far away as quick as you can. To do that, you need a good Frame Shift Drive. The Locust has the best FSD I can fit in there, but that's not all you can do. Engineers can improve your FSD even further, provided you can get them the materials they need.
I already had Arsenic, but I still needed some Datamined Wake Exceptions and Chemical Manipulators. First, the Wake Exceptions. I quickly strapped a Wake Scanner to a Sidewinder, and set out for some scans. I found 3 Wake Exceptions within the first 10 minutes, which is incredibly lucky. You usually want to try a few times though, to make sure you get the best result, so I tried getting a few more. When I left, I had 6 total.
I went to a settlement called Dav's Hope. There was a sign reading Hobbes Hope though, not sure why. I found some Chemical Manipulators there, giving me everything I needed. Arriving at Deicat, I docked at Felicity Farseer's outpost and tried my luck. I didn't get much improvement this time, so I'll probably try again in the near future.
